The Question that Floated

A story about a sinking stone, a floating frisbee, and the invisible push of water.

Rob thought he knew which things were supposed to sink and which things were supposed to float. Then a small stone disappeared beneath the water while his much larger frisbee stayed on top. Apparently, there was more to floating than he thought.

A Stone and a Frisbee

Rob loved throwing his frisbee near the water.

Not into the water. Near it.

There was an important difference.

One afternoon, Rob stood beside a quiet pond practising self-caught flight. He sent the frisbee gliding out over the water, watching it skim through the air before curving gently back toward shore.

The first throw floated beautifully and returned right into his right hand. The second climbed a little higher, drifted farther out, and came back just the same.

Rob smiled.

Then he tried a third throw.

This time, the frisbee glided low across the pond, but something changed. One edge lifted, the disc tilted, and instead of curving back toward Rob, it turned over and dropped onto the water.

Splash.

The frisbee bobbed once and settled on the surface, floating just far enough from shore that Rob couldn’t reach it.

He looked around, spotted a small stone, and picked it up.

“Maybe I can splash it closer.”

He tossed the stone toward the frisbee.

The stone struck the water beside it…

and disappeared.

Plunk.

Rob stared.

The frisbee floated. The stone sank.

He looked from one to the other.

“The stone is smaller,” he said. “So why is the frisbee the one that floats?”

The Wind moved across the pond, and ripples spread toward shore.

Rob tilted his head. “You know where this is going, don’t you?”

The Wind lifted the frisbee from the water.

Rob smiled. “Here we go.”

A Very Shallow Boat

When the Wind settled, Rob was standing beside a sparkling blue harbour. Stone buildings climbed the hillside behind him while wooden ships rested along the docks and sailors carried ropes, baskets, and bundles through the warm afternoon light.

A few steps away, a man knelt beside a large basin of water.

He placed a shallow wooden tray onto the surface and carefully added several stones. The tray leaned to one side. He adjusted the stones. It leaned to the other side.

He moved one stone toward the centre.

The tray tipped completely over.

Splash.

The man closed his eyes.

Rob waited.

The man opened them again, removed the tray from the basin, poured out the water, and set it back on the surface.

Rob stepped closer. “Having trouble?”

The man looked up. “I am learning.”

The tray tipped again.

He watched it sink.

“Slowly.”

Rob smiled and held up his frisbee. “Could you use another boat?”

The man studied it carefully.

“It is rather shallow.”

“It isn’t actually a boat.”

“Then it is an exceptionally shallow boat.”

Rob laughed.

The man smiled. “Archimedes.”

“I’m Rob.”

Shall We Sink It?

Rob placed the frisbee upside down on the water.

It floated.

Archimedes leaned closer.

Rob placed one small stone in the centre of the frisbee. It sank slightly lower but remained on the surface. He added another, then another.

The frisbee settled deeper into the water.

Archimedes watched the waterline climb up the red rim.

“Again,” he said.

Rob removed the stones and started over. This time, he placed all of them near one edge.

The frisbee tilted sharply.

Rob reached for it, but he was too late.

Water poured over the side.

The frisbee sank, splashing both of them.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Water dripped from Archimedes’ beard.

Rob tried not to laugh.

He was unsuccessful.

Archimedes looked down at his soaked clothes.

“A highly successful failure.”

Rob raised an eyebrow. “It sank.”

“Exactly.”

Archimedes retrieved the frisbee and placed it gently on the water again.

“It showed us something.”

He pointed to the rim. “Balance matters.”

Rob nodded. “And where we put the stones.”

“And the shape carrying them.”

They arranged the stones more evenly around the centre.

The frisbee floated.

Rob added another stone, then another. Each time, the frisbee settled lower, but it stayed afloat.

Archimedes marked the waterline with his finger.

“The more it carries, the farther it enters the water.”

Rob looked beneath the surface. “And the more water it pushes out of the way.”

Archimedes smiled. “Precisely.”

The Water Pushes Back

Archimedes placed his hand flat on top of the frisbee and pressed downward.

The frisbee resisted.

He pressed harder. The rim dipped beneath the surface, but when he released it, the frisbee rose again.

Rob tried.

He could feel the water pushing against his hand.

“It’s pushing back.”

Archimedes nodded. “The frisbee pushes the water aside. The water pushes upward in return.”

Rob looked at the stones resting inside the frisbee.

“But the stones sank when they were on their own.”

“Try one.”

Rob removed a stone and held it over the basin.

He let go.

The stone sank directly to the bottom.

Then he picked it up and placed it back inside the floating frisbee.

The same stone now rested safely above the water.

Rob stared.

“Same stone.”

“Same water,” Archimedes said.

“Different shape.”

Archimedes nodded. “The stone by itself pushes aside only a small amount of water. But when it rests inside the wide frisbee, the combined shape pushes much more water out of the way.”

He looked into the basin.

“Enough for the water’s upward push to support them.”

Rob looked toward the harbour. A large wooden ship passed slowly beyond the dock while sailors moved across its deck and heavy barrels and crates filled the space below.

The ship floated easily.

Nearby, a sailor dropped a small bronze coin. It slipped between the boards of the dock and vanished beneath the water.

Rob pointed. “That ship must weigh more than the coin.”

“Considerably more.”

“But the ship floats.”

“And the coin does not.”

Rob thought for a moment.

“So weight isn’t the whole answer.”

“No,” said Archimedes. “It rarely is.”

The Question Beneath the Question

They spent the afternoon experimenting. They changed the number of stones. They moved them toward the edges and back to the centre. They floated the frisbee upright, upside down, empty, and full.

Some attempts worked. Others tipped immediately.

Each time the frisbee sank, Archimedes watched closely.

Rob finally asked, “Doesn’t it bother you when an experiment fails?”

Archimedes looked surprised. “Why would it?”

“Because it didn’t do what you wanted.”

Archimedes placed the frisbee back on the water.

“An experiment does not need to do what I want.”

He added one stone near the rim.

The frisbee tilted.

“It needs to show me what happens.”

He moved the stone toward the centre.

The frisbee levelled.

“A failed attempt may still give a perfectly useful answer.”

Rob looked at the soaked wooden tray beside the basin.

Archimedes had not been repeating the same mistake. He had been asking the water a slightly different question each time.

The sinking mattered. The tipping mattered. Even the splashing mattered.

Rob smiled. “A highly successful failure.”

Archimedes smiled back. “Precisely.”

As the afternoon faded, they sat at the edge of the harbour with the frisbee floating between them. The water rose and fell gently beneath it.

Rob watched the disc carefully.

The water had been answering them all along.

They simply had to notice what it moved, what it carried, and how strongly it pushed back.

What Else Can Push?

Rob picked up the frisbee and shook off the water.

“I think I understand.”

Archimedes waited.

“The frisbee and the stones push water out of the way. The water pushes upward. If they push aside enough water, they float.”

Archimedes nodded.

Rob looked toward the ships.

“So even something heavy can float if its shape moves enough water.”

“Very good.”

A breeze swept across the harbour. The edge of the frisbee lifted slightly in Rob’s hand.

He felt the Wind pressing against it.

Rob looked from the water to the frisbee.

Then he looked up.

“If water can push upward…”

Archimedes followed his gaze.

“…can air push upward too?”

The Wind began to swirl around them.

Archimedes smiled. “That sounds like another experiment.”

The breeze caught the frisbee and lifted it from Rob’s hand. The harbour began to fade.

Rob reached out with his right hand and caught the frisbee as the Wind carried him away.

When Rob returned to the pond, the water was calm.

He threw the frisbee high into the evening sky. For a moment, it seemed to hang there.

Not because gravity had disappeared.

Not because the frisbee had forgotten how to fall.

The air had something to say too.

Rob watched it glide back toward him.

The next question was already rising.

The Adventure may be over, but the wondering doesn’t have to be.
